FIXED-BED PILOT PLANT FOR BIODIESEL PRODUCTION
UEE has successfully developed a highly energy efficient, high throughput
continuous flow fixed-bed reactor technology for cost-effective biodiesel
production. The patent-pending heterogeneous catalyst UEE-BASE-S
pellets is used in the fixed-bed reactor. The successful application of this
technology to biodiesel production will significantly increase biodiesel
productivity, eliminate the washing step and associated waste stream, and
reduce the plant size and capital costs.
The main components of the plant include methanol and soybean oil
feedstock tanks with heating capability; high temperature and pressure
metering pumps with pulsation dampeners for feedstock transfer; flow rate,
temperature, and pressure control and monitor system; proprietary liquid
mixing system; fixed-bed reactor system; methanol condensation and
recycle system; and biodiesel and glycerol separation system. All the
engineering materials are stainless steel. The production capacity of this
plant is 60,000 gallons per year at 100 oC and 80,000 gallons per year at
120 oC. The design and engineering of this pilot plant is unique and
innovative.
